How Far is America from Here?

How Far is America from Here?

Autor: International American Studies Association. World Congress

Número de Páginas: 636

How Far is America From Here? approaches American nations and cultures from a comparative and interdisciplinary perspective. It is very much at the heart of this comparative agenda that “America” be considered as a hemispheric and global matter. It discusses American identities relationally, whether the relations under discussion operate within the borders of the United States, throughout the Americas, and/or worldwide. The various articles here gathered interrogate the very notion of “America”: which, whose America, when, why now, how? What is meant by “far”—distance, discursive formations, ideals and ideologies, foundational narratives, political conformities, aberrations, inconsistencies? Where is here—positionality, geographies, spatial compressions, hegemonic and subaltern loci, disciplinary formations, reflexes and reflexivities? These questions are addressed with regard to the multiple Americas within the USA and the bi-continental western hemisphere, as part of and beyond inter-American cultural relations, ethnicities across the national and cultural plurality of America, mutual constructions of North and South, borderlands, issues of migration and...

Latino Politics En Ciencia Politica

Latino Politics En Ciencia Politica

Autor: Tony Affigne

Número de Páginas: 320

More than 53 million Latinos now constitute the largest, fastest-growing, and most diverse minority group in the United States, and the nation’s political future may well be shaped by Latinos’ continuing political incorporation. In the 2012 election, Latinos proved to be a critical voting bloc in both Presidential and Congressional races; this demographic will only become more important in future American elections. Using new evidence from the largest-ever scientific survey addressed exclusively to Latino/Hispanic respondents, Latino Politics en Ciencia Política explores political diversity within the Latino community, considering how intra-community differences influence political behavior and policy preferences. The editors and contributors, all noted scholars of race and politics, examine key issues of Latino politics in the contemporary United States: Latino/a identities (latinidad), transnationalism, acculturation, political community, and racial consciousness. The book contextualizes today’s research within the history of Latino political studies, from the field’s beginnings to the present, explaining how systematic analysis of Latino political behavior has over...

The Exiles and Other Stories

The Exiles and Other Stories

Autor: Horacio Quiroga

Número de Páginas: 168

Tales of risk and danger, suffering, disease, horror, and death. Tales, also, of courage and dignity, hard work, and human endurance in the face of hostile nature and the frequent brutality of men. And tales flavored with piquant touches of humor and bemused irony. These are the stories of the Uruguayan writer Horacio Quiroga, here presented in an important compilation of thirteen of his most compelling tales, sensitively selected and translated by J. David Danielson. Author of some two hundred pieces of fiction, often compared to the works of Kipling, Jack London, and Edgar Allan Poe, Quiroga set many of his stories in the territory of Misiones in northeastern Argentina, the subtropical jungle region where he spent much of his life. Included here are stories from Los desterrados (1926) often said to be his best book, as well as others from Cuentos de amor de locura y de muerte (1917), Anaconda (1921), and El Desierto (1924). The publication of this selection marks the first appearance in English of all but two of the thirteen stories. Quiroga here presents a wide range of characters: parents and children, servant girls and prostitutes, landowners and lumber barons, foremen and...

The Changing American Theatre: Mainstream and Marginal, Past and Present

The Changing American Theatre: Mainstream and Marginal, Past and Present

Autor: Yvonne Shafer

Current trends in anglophone studies: cultural, linguistic and literary research:

Prehispanic Settlement Patterns in the Northwestern Valley of Mexico

Prehispanic Settlement Patterns in the Northwestern Valley of Mexico

Autor: Jeffrey R. Parsons

Número de Páginas: 438

This monograph presents data from a systematic regional archaeological survey carried out over an area of ca. 600 square kilometers during May through December 1973 by the University of Michigan Museum of Anthropology. Six principal occupational cycles are identified: (1) a very sparsely settled Formative era (ca. 500 BC-100 AD) (2) substantial growth during the subsequent Classic period (ca. 100-600 AD) (3) settlement contraction dominated by a single major hilltop center during the Epiclassic (ca. 600-900 AD) (4) explosive growth during the Early Postclassic (ca. 900-1100 AD) (5) near depopulation during the Middle Postclassic (ca. 1100-1300 AD) (6) extensive reoccupation during the Late Postclassic into early Colonial times (ca. 1300-1600 AD) Numerous photographs illustrate details of a landscape that has been radically altered by urban sprawl and commercial agriculture since the time of the fieldwork.
