Cartucho and My Mother's Hands

Cartucho and My Mother's Hands

Autor: Nellie Campobello

Número de Páginas: 144

Nellie Campobello, a prominent Mexican writer and "novelist of the Revolution," played an important role in Mexico's cultural renaissance in the 1920s and early 1930s, along with such writers as Rafael Muñoz and Gregorio López y Fuentes and artists Diego Rivera, Orozco, and others. Her two novellas, Cartucho (first published in 1931) and My Mother's Hands (first published as Las manos de Mamá in 1938), are autobiographical evocations of a childhood spent amidst the violence and turmoil of the Revolution in Mexico. Campobello's memories of the Revolution in the north of Mexico, where Pancho Villa was a popular hero and a personal friend of her family, show not only the stark realism of Cartucho but also the tender lyricism of My Mother's Hands. They are noteworthy, too, as a first-person account of the female experience in the early years of the Mexican Revolution and unique in their presentation of events from a child's perspective.

Among others, Oppenheimer tells the story of Pep Guardiola, the coach who led Barcelona's soccer team to its most glorious seasons; chef Gaston Acurio, who transformed Peruvian food into an engine of economic growth for his country; Bre Pettis, the U.S. entrepreneur who revolutionized the 3D printing industry; Salman Khan, the American teacher who created the ground-breaking Khan Academy free online education website, and Sir Richard Branson, the British music and airline tycoon whose Virgin Galactic company is venturing into the space tourism industry. Autor: Teresita Luévano

Número de Páginas: 226

En este libro, yo, Rosa, te llevo a través de mi vida, desde la niñez hasta la actualidad. Recuerdo personas, abusos y buenos momentos. In this book, I, Rosa, take you through my life, from childhood to the present. I recall times of struggle, abuse, and good memories. This book began as a journal, and because I wrote thoughts down as they came to me, not all parts are in sequential order. Names of people have been changed, but the story remains the same. My hope is that my story will touch someone’s heart and bring attention to issues of child, domestic, and animal abuse. This Was Our Childhood

Constructing selves: Issues in Gender, Age, Ethnicity and Nation

Constructing selves: Issues in Gender, Age, Ethnicity and Nation

Autor: Eduardo De Gregorio-godeo , Ángel Mateos-aparicio

Número de Páginas: 346

The notion of self has become crucial for contemporary cultural studies in its examination identities. Identities are often conceptualized as an engagement of the individual’s self—their condition of being a person—with broader cul-tural cons tructs. However, in addition to being culturally situated, the constitution of selves may be conceived of through identity-construction phenomena whereby individuals’ subjectivities take up, or resist, the subject posi-tions made available in discursive practices. Selves—the notion of ‘Who and I?’—may only be understood as resulting from power-based discourses and cultural practices. In this respect, the idea of the self could be best made sense of in the broader context of the circuits of cul-ture where identities are conformed together with other key cultural processes including representation and cul-tural production, consumption and regulation. The chapters in this collection explore the relations of selves with a wide range of cultural products (e.g. mass media, poetry, fiction, film, painting, advertising, the Internet, education, the institutional, etc.) across a multiplicity of social, political, geographical and...

9 CUENTOS

House of Houses

House of Houses

Autor: Pat Mora

Número de Páginas: 322

Combining poetic language and the traditions of magic realism to paint a vivid portrait of her family, Pat MoraÕs House of Houses is an unconventional memoir that reads as if every member, death notwithstanding, is in one room talking, laughing, and crying. In a salute to the Day of the Dead, the story begins with a visit to the cemetery in which all of her deceased relatives come alive to share stories of the family, literally bringing the food to their own funerals. From there the book covers a year in the life of her clan, revealing the personalities and events that Mora herself so desperately yearns to know and understand. ÒPoet MoraÕs complex and dramatic family history comprises more than personal reminiscences: it also embraces resonant aspects of Mexican American history. Mora recounts her familyÕs traumatic exodus from Mexico to escape the violence of Pancho Villa and his forces and their struggles to begin new lives in another country. To anchor her psychologically rich, dramatic, sometimes funny, often touching multigenerational tale, Mora uses the image of a houseÑthe house of housesÑduring a single year, a fruitful metaphor that allows her to dwell on the bright ...

My Father Envies Me (English and Spanish Version)

My Father Envies Me (English and Spanish Version)

Autor: Mayke R.

Número de Páginas: 212

My dad envies me. I've been an orphan since I was eight months old. Unfortunately, I was mistreated by a bad and envious father, and my whole life has been a torment with him. I will describe, in this book, my father as the person who has done the most harm to me throughout my life, for I have never encountered another person like him. Throughout my life, he has sabotaged my achievements, put me wrong with all the family and friends, and never wanted me to get ahead because he feels less than me. Of course, I have forgiven him for all the evil he has done to me, and I ask God to give him good things despite all the damage he has done to me and even though he has never asked me for an apology. I hope that no one will suffer what I have suffered and that there are no more other fathers like him.

We the Dreamers

We the Dreamers

Autor: Josefina Vázquez Mota

DREAMer: a young visionary, an undocumented immigrant, who wants to achieve the American Dream. As of August 2016 it was estimated that some 35 million Mexicans were living in the United States, 23.5 million of whom were born in the United States and 11.5 million in Mexico. Of the latter, only 5 million are undocumented and of them, 1.3 million are considered DREAMers: young people who were taken to the United States by their parents when they were children, who grew up and were educated in this country, and who -because of their illegal status- face daunting obstacles to develop professionally. This, however, does not prevent them from dreaming. In We the DREAMers, Josefina Vázquez Mota explores the laws and statistics, and above all highlights the narratives and emotions behind the life stories of these DREAMers whose only objectiveis to fulfill their dreams. Their testimonies offer a kaleidoscope of viewpoints, pinpointing many obstacles. Nevertheless, they are voices of young people who have not given up; instead they have created or joined activist groups alongside many other people who, like them, just want to be heard and acknowledged.
