The Zombie Movie Encyclopedia

The Zombie Movie Encyclopedia

Autor: Peter Dendle

Número de Páginas: 261

Zombies are cautionary forms of humankind's most universally cherished ideal--life after death. Ragged, ill-spoken, rotting zombies (or the post-dead) seem socially awkward beside the more popular and aristocratic undead, like Count Dracula. The humble zombie remains, for the most part, unappreciated and unacknowledged--until now. The first exhaustive historical overview of zombie films, this book's lengthy entries evaluate more than 200 movies from 16 countries over a 65-year period from the early 1930s to the late 1990s. It covers everything from large studio films to backyard videography, and touches on memorable television episodes and miscellaneous shorts. An introduction traces the evolution of the genre and interprets the broader significance of the zombie in contemporary Western mythology.

The Zombie Movie Encyclopedia, Volume 2: 2000-2010

Autor: Peter Dendle

Número de Páginas: 293

This is a comprehensive overview of zombie movies in the first 11 years of the new millennium, the most dynamic and vital period yet in the history of the zombie genre. It serves not only as a follow-up to its predecessor (The Zombie Movie Encyclopedia, McFarland 2001), which covered movies from 1932 up until the late 1990s, but also as a fresh exploration of what uniquely defines the genre in the 2000s. In-depth entries provide critical analysis of the zombie as creature in more than 280 feature-length movies, from 28 countries and filmed on six continents. An appendix offers shorter entries for more than 100 shorts and serials.

Race, Oppression and the Zombie

Race, Oppression and the Zombie

Autor: Christopher M. Moreman , Cory James Rushton

Número de Páginas: 242

The figure of the zombie is a familiar one in world culture, acting as a metaphor for "the other," a participant in narratives of life and death, good and evil, and of a fate worse than death--the state of being "undead." This book explores the phenomenon from its roots in Haitian folklore to its evolution on the silver screen and to its radical transformation during the 1960s countercultural revolution. Contributors from a broad range of disciplines here examine the zombie and its relationship to colonialism, orientalism, racism, globalism, capitalism and more--including potential signs that the zombie hordes may have finally achieved oversaturation. Instructors considering this book for use in a course may request an examination copy here.

The Search for Zombie Consciousness and Agency in AMC’s The Walking Dead

The Search for Zombie Consciousness and Agency in AMC’s "The Walking Dead"

Autor: Gernot Meyer

Seminar paper from the year 2017 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,3, Bielefeld University (Fakultät für Linguistik und Literaturwissenschaft: Anglistik), course: Modulprüfung (Profilmodul 2 – British Studies), language: English, abstract: Zombies are - considering the significant amount of media input – nearly all around us. What was once a niche genre, has long spread and entered the public consciousness and pop culture through a variety of movies and, more recently, through one very successful TV series adaption of a comic series, "The Walking Dead" (2010) and its recent spinoff, "Fear the Walking Dead" (2015). Video game series like Left 4 Dead or Dead Island likewise increased the ever-growing stack of zombie productions. And whereas there were few or no academic works specifically about zombies in the past, there is now a considerable part of academia that explores and observes the zombie from many different angles. There are works which examine the zombie culture according to philosophical, religious, historical, political or even environmental points of view. One issue that is being explored in these works is the question...

Zombies

Autor: Vincent Paris

Nicolas Dickner

Original and Remake: “Dawn of the Dead” by George A. Romero (1978) and “Dawn of the Dead” by Zack Snyder (2004)

Autor: Anna Zafiris

Número de Páginas: 10

Seminar paper from the year 2004 in the subject Communications - Movies and Television, grade: 1,6, Utrecht University (Media Studies), course: Remakes & Parody, language: English, abstract: “Dawn of the Dead”, which is also known as “Dawn of the Living Dead” and “Zombie: Dawn of the Dead” or “Zombie”, was issued in 1978. The director George A. Romero added to the title the tagline “When there's no more room in hell, the dead will walk the earth”. It is hard to match this movie with only one genre because there are aspects of horror, drama, thriller and splatter in it (this applies also for the remake). The movie originally was part of Romero’s zombie-series including “Night of the Living Dead”, that appeared in 1968, “Dawn of the Dead” and “Day of the Dead” from 1985. A forth movie “The Land of the Dead” is in preproduction. Apart from “Dawn of the Dead” another movie from this series was remade in 1990, namely “Night of the Living Dead” by Tom Savini, who also took part in the more famous movie “Dawn of the Dead”, both in the original movie and the remake.

Zombie Lending and Depressed Restructuring in Japan

Zombie Lending and Depressed Restructuring in Japan

Autor: Ricardo J. Caballero , Takeo Hoshi , Anil K. Kashyap

Número de Páginas: 130

In this paper, we propose a bank-based explanation for the decade-long Japanese slowdown following the asset price collapse in the early 1990s. We start with the well known observation that most large Japanese banks were only able to comply with capital standards because regulators were lax in their inspections. To facilitate this forbearance the banks often engaged in sham loan restructurings that kept credit flowing to otherwise insolvent borrowers (that we call zombies). Thus, the normal competitive outcome whereby the zombies would shed workers and lose market share was thwarted. Our model highlights the restructuring implications of the zombie problem. The counterpart of the congestion created by the zombies is a reduction of the profits for healthy firms, which discourages their entry and investment. In this context, even solvent banks will not find good lending opportunities. We confirm our story's key predictions that zombie-dominated industries exhibit more depressed job creation and destruction, and lower productivity. We present firm-level regressions showing that the increase in zombies depressed the investment and employment growth of non-zombies and widened the...

Número de Páginas: 247

The Zombie Chasers meets The Goonies in David Macinnis Gill’s middle grade debut about a group of tweens who ride out the zombie apocalypse on a cobbled-together train. Fans of Ty Drago’s The Undertakers: Rise of the Corpses and Max Brallier’s The Last Kids on Earth will lose themselves in this page-turning, spine-chilling, and sometimes hilarious survival story. Wyatt has been riding out the zombie apocalypse on his crew’s cobbled-together train for what feels like forever. It’s a hopeless journey, the train running a loop that covers thousands of miles across the western U.S. But when a mysterious girl arrives with stories of a so-called Nirvana and a potential cure for the zombie parasite, Wyatt must decide between searching for the cure and protecting those entrusted in his care. David Macinnis Gill’s Zombie Train is a compelling survival story full of action, suspense, and plenty of zombies. Filled with both harrowing and humorous moments, Zombie Train follows an eccentric cast of characters as they contend with a changing world and shifting loyalties and friendships, and as they fight to remain in control—of their lives and of the future.
