Valle Inclan: The Lights of Bohemia

Valle Inclan: The Lights of Bohemia

Autor: John E. Lyon

Número de Páginas: 193

Written in the early 1920s, Lights of Bohemia is set in the twilight phase of Madrid's bohemian artistic life against the turbulent social and political background of events between 1900 and 1920. The play's protagonist, the poet Max Estrella, confronts the dilemma between art and social commitment and the problem of salvaging some sort of authenticity and identity in a context which converts him into an anachronism. This is the first play in a series of 'esperpentos' or 'grotesques' in which Valle-Inclan tries to convey the tragi-grotesque contradictions of his contemporary surroundings by the use of similarly contrasting registers in his theatre.

Celos aun del aire matan

Celos aun del aire matan

Autor: Juan Hidalgo

Número de Páginas: 281

Book URL: https://www.areditions.com/rr/rrb/b187.html This critical performing edition of the earliest extant Hispanic opera, Celos aun del aire matan, presents the most extensive surviving example of Hispanic baroque theatrical music. Designed for the Spanish royal court¿s festivities honoring the marriage of Infanta María Teresa of Spain and King Louis XIV of France, this passionate fiesta cantada in three acts was first produced in Madrid, thanks to the collaboration of court dramatist Pedro Calderón de la Barca (1600¿1681) and composer Juan Hidalgo (1614¿85). The opera was designed for performance by a cast of young female actress-singers (the only role requiring a male voice is for a comic tenor) and a continuo band. This edition, which includes an extensive introduction, an edition and English translation of the Calderón text, and a unique loa from the 1682 Naples production, contributes to a better understanding of Hidalgo¿s music and the contribution of Hispanic music to early modern musical culture

Jubana!

Autor: Gigi Anders

Número de Páginas: 304

According to Gigi Anders, when you’re a bride-to-be Jubana in America, or a Cuban Jewess in the US of A, you have to know you’re heading straight into the mondo-bizarro jaws of cross cultural hell. As the granddaughter of Boris and Dora, destitute teenagers from Russia and Lithuania who immigrated to Cuba in the early 20s, Gigi experienced what can best be described as life as a quintessential Jewish Cuban Princess, or JCP. Gigi asks a question which has to this day, kept her trying to figure herself out: What if you’re Cuban, the self proclaimed Jews of the Caribbean, AND Jewish? How Jewish can one possibly be? And how American for that matter? So begins the hilarious self-examination of a sex-crazed woman addicted to Parliament cigarettes, Tab cola, lipstick, red toenails, who is both brilliant and sexy, and who refuses to settle for any man who does not fit “the bill”. Whether dealing with what she refers to as her Mami Dearest, or her time at the waspy Sidwell Friends in D.C., to her horrifying experience with being sexually assaulted by an older man her parents tried to set her up on a date with, to her years as a feature writer for the Washington Post, Gigi leads...

Myths in Crisis

Myths in Crisis

Autor: Jose Manuel Losada , José Manuel Losada

Número de Páginas: 470

This trilingual volume examines the extent to which myths are affected by the crises of the 20th and 21st centuries. It brings together four theoretical studies which analyse both the crisis of structure – implying the distortion or disappearance of myth – and the crisis of concepts and terminology that currently threaten the study of mythology. The largest section of the volume focuses on the crises that have affected ancient, medieval and modern literary myths from a global perspective, taking into account psychology, ethics, politics and contemporary meta-literature. The final section examines the crisis experienced by those myths which permeate the material world, investigating historical and fictitious characters, mythologized places, and languages. The volume is a remarkable collection of 30 texts that were selected from 300 proposals by prestigious researchers from over 30 countries during the 3rd International Conference of Myth Criticism held in Madrid in October 2014.

Receptions of Antiquity

Receptions of Antiquity

Autor: Jan Nelis

Número de Páginas: 372

This volume presents a series of papers which cover the general theme of the reception of antiquity, a topic which has in recent years become a discipline in itself, or what some might call a 'cross-discipline'. Indeed the Nachleben of the (culture of) classical antiquity, and of antiquity as a whole, manifests in a number of diverse domains, opening up the field of reception studies to scholars from disciplines other than Classics. This collection of papers illustrates this diversity, uniting as it does original research by scholars from a variety of disciplines: classicists, historians, theatre historians, architectural historians, psychologists, archaeologists, artists, and more, all of whom have treated some aspect of the so-called 'classical tradition' by means of their own individual approaches, leading to a volume rich and dense in themes and methodologies. 'Receptions of antiquity' has been written by friends of Freddy Decreus, in honour of his career, and in celebration of his thought.

"This book examines the work of Guillermo Carnero, one of Spain's most important contemporary poets, in the context of the critical theories developed in the West after World War II that inform all of Carnero's writing." "Previous critical studies have tried to link Carnero's poetry to that of other novisimo poets within the narrow confines of Spanish poetics and literary history. This study seeks to move beyond the limiting perspective of the Spanish generational paradigm."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. All Rights Reserved
